I dreamt of these earrings. Of endless red coral flourishing in a reef under turquoise waters. If you didn’t know, red coral, so poignant and bright in so much southwest jewelry, is illegal to harvest. You can find vintage red coral beads for hundreds of dollars in some beads stores. We over harvested it. It makes me sad. Such a sacred, beautiful creature silenced. I also understand why the coral was so captivating. In glass seed beads color 407 has captivated me. It’s the bright coral-red I use in so many of my designs. The color evokes life for me. It evokes passion and blood pumping through my veins! It evokes sunrises and sunsets, ripe berries and the throat of a hummingbird wizzing through the air.
